About Me

It may seem strange, but I started thinking about ageing quite early on.

In my 30s I studied gerontology (about ageing and old age) and then I went on to work in health, social care and housing.

As relatives got older, I saw how their homes could disable them –for example, different levels, steps, narrow doorways – making life difficult.  Supporting older friends and family has been my biggest teacher.

My perspective on getting older is to try and plan ahead.  I think I’m positive and realistic – looking forward to a long and healthy old age but investing in things that will make it easier to cope with any frailties that come along (physical or cognitive, dementia) and trying to age-proof our home and surroundings.

In 2017 my husband and I started planning to make our ramshackle house age friendly.  With the help of a great architect and builder we have achieved our goal.  Creating an age-proof home meant being realistic about what age might bring (such as dementia and disabilities) and considering how age friendly our home was and could be.

It was only as we neared the end of the project and discussed it with other people that I decided I wanted to share our experience.  Having spent over two years, first planning and then seeing our new home emerge, we are in a great position to pass on our learning and advice.

I’ve written some short articles  reflecting on our experience. To find out what we’ve learnt in the process see Articles.
